WHAT DOES YOUR BRAND MEAN TO YOU?

We are a father and daughter team that see this business as an opportunity to introduce the non-rock collector to the natural beauty of rocks, minerals and fossils by crafting them into unique, one-of-a kind pieces of home décor. As life-long rock collectors, we are proud to share our love and excitement for rocks
with those that may be unfamiliaror unaware of the beauty they hold.

WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION FOR STARTING YOU BRAND?

Coming from a family of entrepreneurs, going back three generations, I guess you could say it was simply in our DNA. We knew we wanted to start a business, it simply became a question of what we would do. When Chris’ brother and his wife and children opened a successful rock shop in Paw Paw, Michigan, we took note and decided to start something similar, but with our own twist, making things out of rocks!

WHAT WAS THE FIRST PRODUCT YOU CREATED?

Our first products were rock oil lamps made from pieces of a granite countertop that was reclaimed from a recent kitchen remodel. This worked out to be the perfect medium to start with to develop our processes. From these early trials, we gained the confidence to take on other types of specimen-grade rocks and even different types of finished goods, including air plant holders, wine bottle stoppers, and candle holders.

HOW HAS YOUR BRAND EVOLVED?

We have only been creating rock décor for a little over a year, but we already have grown so much. We are doing bigger and better shows monthly, and using more rare and unique items in our products, and challenging ourselves to continue growing and creating new items. From our start, where our product line consisted of two décor items, oil lamps and bottle stoppers, we now proudly offer over a dozen décor items crafted from rocks!

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PRODUCT OR COLLECTION YOU’VE CREATED?

Our favorite collection is our Colorado collection, where all of items are made from rocks and stones sourced in Colorado. It is our favorite because Colorado has so many beautiful rocks, and it’s fun to tell customers about the miner we got the rock from, or where in Colorado we found it. They have a more complete story to us and it makes it a little more fun for both us and the buyer.

WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF YOUR DAY?

The interaction with our customers, either in person and fairs or online via email has been by far the best part of our day. Watching a child’s eyes light up and head directly to our display is so heartwarming and we can’t help but smile. To quote one of our young customers, “Finally, something at this fair that’s interesting to kids!”
As we have learned, a lot of people that have an affinity for rocks have the same draw to them that we do so getting to meet them and see them get excited about our products is a feeling that cannot be beat.

WHAT MATERIALS DO YOU WORK WITH?

We pride ourselves in using high quality specimen-level rocks and fossils in our décor items. For example, we source amethysts directly from Uruguay to ensure we bring our customers the highest quality amethyst as a starting point for the items we create. We also develop relationships with both local and foreign miners and collectors so we are able to trade for the most unique and rare items available.

WHY DO YOU DO WHAT YOU DO?

We created this business to combine our natural draw to creating, and our love for rocks. We have always felt a draw to rocks for their beauty and uniqueness; we wanted a way to share that with others. The entire process, from creating through promoting ad selling has been completely enjoyable and rewarding.

BEST PART ABOUT BEING A COLORADO MAKER?

Colorado is a very supportive community for makers like us. It is remarkable how many people come to support local small businesses, and rain or shine come to shop local and homemade.

QUICK FACT #1

Our company name, “Roccia Roba”, loosely translates to “Rock Stuff” in Italian.

QUICK FACT #2

The rocks we source for our rock décor come from all over the world, including Madagascar, Uruguay, Morocco, and even right here in Colorado.

QUICK FACT #3

When we tell people we sell “rock stuff” they immediately think of “The Rolling Stones”, or “Metallica”. Rarely do they think of amethyst, labradorite, or ammonite!

We tend to agree with the old adage “choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life”. This whole business doesn’t feel like a job because we really enjoy it, if you’re passionate about something, take the leap and have fun with it. It’s scary but worth it.
