A longtime Flea-to-Fetch vendor we’re excited for you to meet at the Summer Market is Bjorn’s Colorado Honey, a Boulder-based company that offers Colorado honey produced in the Scandinavian tradition and bee-based skincare. Founder Pontus, who is also the company’s beekeeper, grew up in Sweden and learned the practice from his grandfather Björn, the company’s namesake. Be sure to stop by their booth for a taste of their stellar honey while shopping this weekend!
WHAT DOES YOUR BRAND MEAN TO YOU?
We are small batch honey producers based in Boulder, Colorado. Pontus, our beekeeper, grew up in Sweden and learned the practice from his grandfather Björn; the company namesake. Our brand is a celebration of Pontus’ Swedish roots and the beekeeping heritage he comes from. With that in mind, Björn’s Colorado Honey aims to provide top-quality local honey produced in our Swedish family tradition.
FIRST PRODUCT YOU CREATED?
Our Propolis Honey. Propolis honey was created by Pontus’ father Torbjörn in Sweden and it quickly became a hit. When Pontus moved to Colorado, he couldn’t resist whipping up his own batch. By blending Colorado honey with high-quality propolis extract we boost honey’s health benefits. Propolis, an age-old remedy made by the bees from tree and plant resins, is known to bolster the immune system and contains antifungal and antibacterial properties.
HOW HAS YOUR BRAND EVOLVED?
I think the Björn’s Colorado Honey brand has developed into a source of information about honey and honey bees. There is a lot of misinformation and confusion about what “real honey” is and Pontus, our beekeeper, tries very hard to educate our customers about how important supporting local beekeepers can be for the environment and one’s own health. We also do a lot of education about Propolis which is bee’s natural defense against disease. It’s not widely known in the United States event though is it extremely common in Europe, Asia.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PRODUCT OR COLLECTION YOU’VE CREATED?
We’re really proud that our honey is used by PB Love Co. to make their amazing Salty Peanut and Cinnamon Almond nut-butters! Mario, the owner, and founder at PB Love was our first bulk honey customer and we have had the pleasure of supplying his honey ever since. It’s so great to have a friend who is also running a small batch food business in the area. We bounce ideas off each other and lend advice when we can. Plus we love to eat Mario’s nut-butters so it’s always great to make a trade!
WHY DO YOU DO WHAT YOU DO?
Because Pontus grew up as a 3rd generation beekeeper he always thought he’d take over his families honey business. When he met Lara, his wife, they decided to live in Colorado where Lara already had a job in tech. Pontus then realized he better get some bees so he could follow his dream of becoming a beekeeper even if he wasn’t going
to take over his family business. These days Pontus takes great pride in carrying on the Swedish family traditions of honey making and beekeeping and he hopes to pass the business on to his daughter, Ester, someday.
WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF YOUR DAY?
Being out in the bee yards with the bees buzzing around and the sweet smell of honey is most certainly the best part of our day. It’s wonderful to be able to work outside, especially in Colorado where we have such a lovely environment.
WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION FOR STARTING YOUR BRAND?
Pontus, our beekeeper, grew up in Sweden and learned the practice from his grandfather Björn; the company namesake. Our brand is a celebration of Pontus’ Swedish roots and the beekeeping heritage he comes from. With that in mind, Björn’s Colorado Honey aims to provide top-quality local honey produced in our Swedish family tradition.
BEST PART ABOUT BEING A COLORADO MAKER?
Colorado is a place where people truly care about their health, eating locally, and supporting small business. It’s a joy to connect with people who are interested in learning about honey and honeybees and who care about what they put in their bodies. We take real pride in educating our customers about the wonders of the beehive, from propolis to bee pollen and of course, honey.
